Appalachian Miles for Smiles

Appalachian Miles for Smiles provides FREE dental and vision care for uninsured residents of our region who are over 18 years of age.

Appalachian Miles for Smiles began in the spring of 2016 out of the great need to help residents of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia who could not afford dental care. During Remote Area Medical (aka RAM) events held in our region, people arrived early to stand in line for dental care and many were turned away because the need was greater than the number of dentists and dental staff could serve. Frank Waldo, a volunteer with RAM, Bruce Sites from Friends in Need, United Way of Kingsport, Landair Transport, and many others partnered together to bring Appalachian Miles for Smiles to reality. Additional services later added were vision, pulmonary, and mammography.

We have partnered annually since 2019 with our neighbors at Mafair United Methodist Church to co-host a two-day event that serves our region. During the event in October 2022, 38 volunteers delivered support and medical services to 69 patients for a combined value of $57,023.

Ukirk (ETSU)

UKirk ETSU- Presbyterian Campus Ministry is the PC(USA) Campus Ministry at ETSU. They value connection, inclusion, and love and mean it when they say that they are “a place to belong.” They provide a space for students to grow in their faith, develop friendships, form their worldview, and be of service to those around them. Their campus house is a place to be heard, contemplate spirituality, do homework, or just be comfortable and hang out. They meet on Mondays, virtually or outside weather depending, for a free meal and worship gathering. Members of WRPC share with other area Presbyterian churches by providing dinner for the students on Monday evenings before worship gathering that is led by John Golden.
